Tamil New Year Celebration: A Memorable Gathering
Relive the highlights of our Tamil New Year celebration — a vibrant gathering of the Sri Lankan Tamil community honouring tradition, culture, and heritage.
Celebrating Tamil New Year — Puthandu 2024
This April, Thamizhi hosted one of its most memorable events of the year — our Tamil New Year (Puthandu) celebration. Families and community members came together in the spirit of joy, tradition, and togetherness.
Highlights of the Celebration
Traditional Kolam
The event began with the drawing of intricate kolam (rangoli) patterns at the entrance, welcoming guests with colour and artistry rooted in Tamil tradition.
Cultural Performances
Our talented community members — young and old — took to the stage to perform:
- Classical Bharatanatyam dance
- Carnatic vocal music
- Villu paatu (bow song) performances
- Folk dances from different Tamil regions
Traditional Cuisine
No Tamil celebration is complete without food! Community volunteers prepared an authentic spread including:
- Pongal (sweet rice)
- Murukku and traditional snacks
- Mango pachadi — symbolising the six tastes of life
Youth Participation
One of the most heartwarming aspects of the celebration was seeing the younger generation take an active role — performing, helping organise, and connecting with their elders.
Looking Ahead
Events like this remind us why Thamizhi exists — to create spaces where our community can come together, celebrate who we are, and pass our heritage on to the next generation.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to our upcoming events. Stay connected with us on Facebook for updates.
